The world’s most beautiful fjord journey

Explore the Lysefjord by ferry

A boat trip through the Lysefjord is an experience that gives long-lasting memories. Glide through the fjord while looking at the steep mountain walls. Pass waterfalls, flocks of copper – also called fjord seals, domesticated goats, and beautiful secluded farms.

By using ferries you can combine fjord sightseeing with an extra night in Songesand, Flørli, or Lysebotn. Wind down, go hiking, and explore the fjord. Several local tour operators offer organized activities such as hiking, kayaking, sailing, RIB boat trips, and more.

Lysefjord Ferry FAQ

Can I book ferry tickets directly in the Ferry Planner?

The Ferry Planner helps you find available ferry departures across the Lysefjord and provides direct links to the ferry operators’ booking pages. When booking is available, simply follow the link to reserve your tickets with the operator. Some departures cannot be booked online, but the planner will still show the available sailing so you can plan your trip.

Can I take my car on the ferry?

Some ferries allow cars, but capacity is limited and advance booking is often required.

Not all departures carry vehicles. The Ferry Planner will indicate which departures allow car transport.

Why can’t I book the Kolumbus ferry yet?

Kolumbus releases ferry tickets in batches. Unfortunately, they do not publish a schedule for when new booking dates become available.

Try first to use our Ferry Planner to find a departure on your preferred travel date. If a departure and/or date is not available yet, you can register your email in the Ferry Planner and receive an automatic notification when booking opens.

Can we take a car to / park at Flørli?

Flørli does not have a road connection.

Some ferries can transport cars to Flørli, but parking space on the quay is extremely limited and reserved for guests with an accommodation reservation. Motorhomes are strictly forbidden at Flørli. Even if you are staying at Flørli, it is usually best to leave your car at Lauvvik, Forsand, Songesand or Lysebotn and travel to Flørli as a passenger. There is no need to have a car while staying at Flørli.

What is the difference between the ferry quays at Lauvvik, Forsand and Oanes?

Lauvvik, Forsand and Oanes are three ferry quays located near the entrance of the Lysefjord. They serve different ferry routes and are reached from different sides of the fjord.

Lauvvik is the main departure point for ferries traveling into the Lysefjord, including routes to Lysebotn, Flørli and Songesand. From Lauvvik you can also take the Høgsfjord ferry to Oanes, which is part of the public road connection between the Stavanger/Sandnes area and Ryfylke.

Forsand is located on the Ryfylke side of the fjord, close to Preikestolen. Most Lysefjord ferries stop at Forsand, which makes it a convenient quay if you are traveling between the Lysefjord and the Preikestolen area. At Forsand, you cannot take a ferry to/from Lauvvik.

Oanes is located on the east side of the Høgsfjord and can only be used for the Høgsfjord ferry connection to Lauvvik. This ferry is part of the public road network and connects the Stavanger/Sandnes area with Ryfylke. At Oanes, you cannot take a ferry to/from the Lysefjord.

You can drive between Forsand and Oanes via the Lysefjord Bridge.

Always check the Lysefjord Ferry Planner to see which quay your ferry departs from and whether your departure stops at all quays.

Which ferry operators run services in the Lysefjord?

Several operators run ferry services in the Lysefjord, including:

  • Kolumbus (regional public ferry)

  • Rødne Fjord Cruise

  • Høgsfjordferja

The Ferry Planner shows departures from all operators so you can easily compare options.

Why is the Rødne tourist ferry more expensive than the Kolumbus local ferry?

The Rødne ferry and the Kolumbus ferry serve different purposes, which explains the price difference.

The Kolumbus ferry is a public transport service operated on behalf of the regional transport authority. It is primarily intended for local transportation for residents and regional travel. Because it is part of the public transport system, the service is heavily subsidized by public funding (taxes), which allows ticket prices to remain relatively low.

Since the route is primarily operated to serve local traffic, vehicle capacity is limited, and priority is often given to residents and essential transport. For this reason, Kolumbus typically releases vehicle booking availability only shortly before the travel date, which means it is often not possible to reserve a spot far in advance.

The Rødne ferry, on the other hand, is a tourist sightseeing ferry operating mainly in the summer season. It is designed as a travel experience through the Lysefjord and is not subsidized as public transport. Ticket prices therefore, reflect the commercial tourism product. Rødne opens its booking system many months in advance, allowing visitors to plan and reserve their trip well in advance

Can I travel one-way through the Lysefjord?

Yes. Most ferry operators allow one-way tickets.

When booking, simply choose your departure quay and destination quay. Some booking systems default to round-trip tickets, so make sure to select “one way” if that is what you need.

What is the best way to travel between Stavanger and Lysebotn?

There are several options:

  • Ferry connections via the Lysefjord

  • Combination of ferry and bus

  • Driving via Sirdal

Use the Ferry Planner to see ferry options, especially if you want to travel through the fjord instead of around it by road.

How early should we arrive for the ferry?

If you are travelling with a car (make sure you have a reservation!), you should normally arrive 30–45 minutes before departure.

Passengers without vehicles should usually arrive 20 minutes before departure, but always check the operator’s instructions.

Where can I find ferry timetables for the Lysefjord?

The easiest way is to use the Lysefjord Ferry Planner on this page, which gathers departures from multiple ferry operators in one place.

You can also visit the operators directly:
