Mulen on the south side of Lysefjorden is a well-known landmark for boaters, with the masts holding up the power lines across the fjord. Nearby is the rock formation \u201cVirgin Mary with child\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mulen is a well-known landmark for boaters in Lysefjorden. It protrudes from the south side of the fjord where it curves. At the top of Mulen, masts hold up a line that spans across the fjord from Bakkafjellet. Nearby is a rock formation known as “Virgin Mary with Child,” also called “Kjerringa” or “Giskj\u00e5.” Depending on the light and one’s imagination, this formation can resemble a woman with a child in her arms. The origin of the formation, made up of several loose stones, is still uncertain, but theories suggest it was once a whole mountain that was split by lightning.<\/p>\n

Only 200 meters from the sea, Mulaplassen is said to have been home to a man named Tron, and the place where he had his boat is still called Tronst\u00f8.<\/p>\n

On the way into the fjord from Mulen, you can catch a glimpse of fjord seals, in Norwegian called “steinkobbene,” which lie on land or swim in the fjord.\u00a0<\/p>\n
